Summary:
The article titled, "Destroyed," talks about mind enhancing drugs. The author is supposed to be writing a paper for his Introduction to Psychology class. His paper is supposed to be based off of one question, "Are mind enhancers cheating?" He explains that the fans worry excessively over the fact that the players that are taking the performance enhancers, or mind enhancers are cheating the game. They aren't worried about the long term risks that those drugs might have on those athletes. Fans are focused on the fact that the athletes are harming the fairness of the game, and not the fact that the athletes are harming their own bodies. The author also mentions that when a professional athlete makes a remarkable victory, commentators immediately assume that their win was a result of cheating. So in conclusion the author is trying to get the point across that people and, "fans," are worried about the wrong mistakes that athletes are making by using mind enhancing drugs, they aren't just cheating the game they are destroying their own bodies.
Paraphrasing Paragraph #10
Messages against steroid use are using visualization methods showing that steroid use can cause your limbs to fall off. Steroid use is very dangerous. Using steroids can feel great when you use them, but in the long run steroids are harming your body in so many ways. Enhancers cause even fatal health problems. The author gives an example of an MVP major league baseball player who used steroids. Eight years after he had been awarded the Most Valuable Player he had a fatal heart attack due to his steroid use. The player used steroids during his MVP season. People should get the players help with their problems and be worried about them other than going towards them with negativity, just because they ruined the fairness of the game. (Martin 582)
Quote/ Defining moment from article:
The defining moment from the article is where he says, "It is the players, much more than the games, that we must protect."(Martin 582) I think this part of the article is very important because it is where he gets his initial point across. I also think that he is getting a good point across. I personally agreed with the statement, and that is why I thought it was such a defining part.
